Xiaomi 17 Pro Max Review: The Two-Screen Behemoth with a 7,500mAh Battery

Published:

Read our full review of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. With a revolutionary dual-screen design, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 7500mAh battery, and 50MP cameras, is this the new flagship king? Find out.

Xiaomi is making a bold move. Skipping the ’16’ moniker entirely, the new Xiaomi 17 series is here to align directly with Apple’s naming scheme, and it’s bringing a new top-tier model to the fight: the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

This new “Pro Max” is, in many ways, the spiritual successor to the beloved Xiaomi 15 Pro, but it’s bigger, bolder, and packed with experimental tech.

One important note before we dive in: we are reviewing the Chinese version of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. The international model hasn’t been announced, so some features or software may differ if it gets a global release. We picked ours up from a Mi Store in China, but it’s a device worth considering even as a gray import.

Let’s see if this flagship is just a gimmick or the new king of Android.

The Return of the Second Screen

The 6.9-inch LTPO OLED on the front is stunning, but it’s not the main story. The real centerpiece is on the back.

Xiaomi has brought back the secondary display concept from the Mi 11 Ultra, but this time, it’s done right. We’re talking about a 2.9-inch LTPO OLED screen that mirrors the quality of the main panel. It’s bright, has a 120Hz refresh rate, and is far more functional than its predecessor. You can use it as a high-quality viewfinder for selfies with the main camera, check notifications, or run mini-apps. It’s a feature that genuinely sets the 17 Pro Max apart in a crowded market.

Performance: First with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

The Xiaomi 17 series is the first in the world to run Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. This 3nm silicon promises not just the expected performance leap (with its 4.6 GHz Oryon V3 high-performance cores) but also significant gains in power efficiency. Paired with up to 16GB of RAM and new UFS 4.1 storage, this phone isblazing fast. HyperOS 3 feels incredibly fluid, and no app or game we threw at it caused a single stutter.

Camera Overhaul: 50MP All-Round

Xiaomi has made meaningful updates to the camera system.

  • Main Camera: The primary shooter uses a new, larger Light Fusion 950L sensor. It’s still 50MP, but the bigger 1/1.28″ sensor paired with an f/1.7 aperture pulls in excellent light.
  • Telephoto: The 5x optical zoom camera also gets a new, larger 50MP sensor thanks to a new prism layout, allowing for macro focusing from as close as 30cm.
  • Selfie Camera: This was a long-overdue update. The front camera is now a 50MP sensor with autofocus (PDAF). The difference is night and day; selfies are sharp, detailed, and offer great dynamic range. You can also shoot 4K@60fps video from the front camera, which is a huge win for vloggers.

A Mind-Boggling 7,500mAh Battery

Yes, you read that right. Xiaomi has managed to fit a colossal 7,500mAh battery into this phone’s 8.0mm frame. This is, without a doubt, the biggest battery we’ve ever seen in a mainstream flagship. As expected, battery life is phenomenal. This is a legitimate two-day phone, even with heavy use.

The best part? There’s no compromise on charging. The 17 Pro Max still supports 100W wired HyperCharge and 50W wireless charging.

Unboxing (Chinese Version)

Our Chinese retail unit came with a generous box. We got the 100W HyperCharge power adapter, a USB-C cable, and a clear protective silicone case. If this phone ever launches in Europe or India, don’t expect the charger to be included.

First Impressions

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is an absolute spec monster. It feels like Xiaomi’s engineers threw every single piece of high-end tech at the wall, and it all stuck. The secondary display is genuinely useful, the battery life is industry-leading, and the new chipset and cameras are top-notch.

The only question that remains is whether the international market will ever officially get this two-screen beast.
